The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the fifth-largest medical establishment in the world and growing. Its Oakland facilities include UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore hospitals, the Kaufman Building, Falk Clinic, the Eye and Ear Institute of Pittsburgh, and Detre Hall. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has recently become affiliated with UPMC, but is still part of the national chain of Children’s Hospitals of America. UPMC is one of the best-known medical centers in the world. It is the largest and busiest organ transplant center in the world, transplanting an organ about every 10 hours.
Dr. Thomas Starzl is the director of the Transplantation Institute. Dr. Starzl was the worlds first to perform a liver transplant in 1963 and since has made many valuable contributions to the advancement of transplantation.
Students participate in internships and research, and many also do volunteer work here.
