The bridge that carries the Boulevard of the Allies over Forbes Avenue in Oakland has closed and will remain under construction through November 2008. There also will be several weekend closures of Forbes Avenue between the Birmingham Bridge and Craft Avenue, beginning on Jan. 4, 2008.

These closures will impact two major connecting routes between our Pittsburgh Campus and Downtown Pittsburgh. University faculty, staff, students, and visitors are urged to remain patient during this temporary disruption, follow posted detours, and allow extra time during peak travel hours.

BACKGROUND

A major reconstruction project has begun at the interchange between the Boulevard of the Allies (state Route 885) and Forbes Avenue at the western border of the Pittsburgh Campus. Slated for completion in Spring 2009, this $29 million project will replace several deteriorated roads, bridges, and ramps and create a better, safer entrance to the Oakland area from Downtown Pittsburgh.

PARKWAY EAST PROJECT

In addition, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is currently repaving 4.4 miles of the Parkway East (Interstate 376), a major access route to the Oakland section of the city. Work on this $39 million project is limited to nights and weekends, but does require periodic lane restrictions and ramp closures. Visit PennDOT’s Web site for details.
